Polish translation

Babylon Translations translates into and from Polish for manufacturing, procurement and specialist business communication, with any of its other 31 languages. Native translators living in the target country write the text, and a second qualified linguist revises it under ISO 17100.

Polish inflection

A product name
through Polish grammar

Polish inflects nouns, adjectives and many names through seven cases. A component label in a table takes a different ending when it becomes the object of an instruction, so a terminology list has to identify the concept, not force one visible word form into every sentence.

The effect is sharpest when a manual shares terminology with a parts catalogue and a product website. Readers must recognise the same component in all three while each sentence stays grammatical. Technical translation asks the linguist to tell legitimate inflection from a real inconsistency.

Language and locale

Polish conventions
worth settling early

ConventionPolishWhy it matters
AlphabetLatin with ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź and ż.Ł is a distinct letter, and ź and ż are not interchangeable.
Numbers and datesDecimal comma; space between thousands; dates as day.month.year.A monetary value must keep its currency (zł, PLN) and precision.
Formal addressPan and Pani take third-person verbs; Państwo addresses a group.Business letters sound unnatural if another language’s polite form is copied.
Gendered verbsPast-tense verbs and many adjectives show the speaker’s or subject’s gender.Interface messages need to avoid or resolve gender.
Plural formsSeparate forms for one, two to four, and five or more.Counters such as “3 items” need grammatical variants.
Company dataNIP, KRS and REGON; entity forms Sp. z o.o. and S.A.Registration numbers and entity forms stay as registered.

Plural rules and gender in software

English needs two plural forms; Polish needs three, and a fourth for fractions. A string such as “{n} files selected” cannot be translated as one sentence with a number inserted. Localisation files need plural placeholders, and the translator needs to know what each variable holds.

Gender is a second trap. Polish past-tense verbs mark gender, so an English message such as “Signed in successfully” may need a different form for a man and a woman unless the sentence is reworded. Briefs for software localisation should say whether the reader’s gender is known.

Words that sound like English and are not

Aktualny means current, ewentualnie means possibly, pensja means salary and kontrola means inspection as well as control. A Polish clause using such a word is easy to mistranslate into English, and the reverse happens when English technical vocabulary is carried into Polish without checking.

Register differs by document. A Polish product description may explain a benefit; an instruction must state an action. Website translation keeps Polish characters in navigation, search terms and forms as well as paragraphs, and avoids joining fixed adjectives to variable product names.

Contracts and trade documents

A clause about acceptance of goods must stay distinct from a clause on payment or transfer of risk. In legal translation, recurring definitions and annex references need one stable interpretation across the whole agreement, and Polish court and registry names keep their official form.

Terminology and independent revision

Consistent concepts,
natural Polish sentences

The project manager brings source files and reference terminology together before translation and second-linguist revision.

Polish target text goes to a native speaker living in Poland with more than ten years of experience in the relevant field. The subject determines the assignment alongside the language pair.

CAT tools, including Trados Studio, hold repeated material and approved terms. The reviser checks the translation against the source under ISO 17100, weighing meaning as well as grammatical form. Dedicated QA software supports the process, while inflected words still call for linguistic judgment.

Practical questions

Polish translation
before commissioning

Why does the same Polish term have different endings?

Polish case and number change a word’s ending without changing the underlying term. A component name in a heading may look different inside an operating instruction. Terminology review must separate grammatical variation from a competing technical term; forcing identical strings into every context introduces errors.

Can Polish diacritics be removed from product content?

No. Polish text keeps its diacritics in normal publication. Letters such as ł, ą and ż belong to the alphabet and can distinguish words or names. A restricted technical field needs an explicit handling rule; it should not become a reason to strip the alphabet from the whole translated document.

How formal should Polish business correspondence be?

Polish business letters usually need an explicit choice between Pan, Pani and a collective form such as Państwo. The recipient and the relationship decide the register. Existing approved letters can set a convention, especially when the source language has one polite form for every kind of recipient.

Which language pairs does the agency offer for Polish?

Polish can be source or target with any of the agency’s other 31 languages. For a Polish source manual, the target-language translator needs product context, consistent component references and any approved terminology. Complete instructions and related tables are more informative than extracts because they show how a term works across the equipment description.

What determines the cost of Polish translation?

Cost depends on the source text, specialist field, repetition, file condition and schedule. Existing translations and terminology can inform the assessment, but they must be identified and evaluated. Complete files let the project manager account for notes, tables and annexes that are easy to overlook in a word total.
