Ukrainian translation

Babylon Translations provides Ukrainian translation for companies, legal departments and technical teams, from or into any of its other 31 languages. Native translators in the target country write the text, and second-linguist revision under ISO 17100 checks it. Ukrainian is handled as a language in its own right.

A language in its own right

Ukrainian is the state language of Ukraine, and its written standard has letters other Cyrillic languages lack: ґ, є, і and ї, plus an apostrophe inside words such as м’яч. Files that lose these characters, or swap them for look-alikes, damage names and searchable text alike.

Source sets from the region are sometimes mixed. Russian material should be identified as Russian rather than treated as an alternative spelling of Ukrainian, because vocabulary, spelling and terminology differ, and the target reader expects Ukrainian.

A source-led process

Native Ukrainian,
checked against the source

The translator works into a mother tongue in the target country; a second qualified linguist revises meaning, terminology and completeness.

Babylon Translations pairs in-house project managers and proofreaders with a translator network whose linguists have more than ten years of experience in their subjects. The brief names the source language, target language and intended use, and separates Ukrainian from Russian material where a set contains both.

Trados Studio and other CAT tools hold terminology and repeated content, but they do not interpret case endings or inspect a name in context. The quality framework combines ISO 17100 revision with dedicated QA software; an earlier translation is reference material to assess, not proof of a correct term.

Names, cases and transliteration

A Ukrainian person’s name changes form within a sentence because it is declined. The base form must be identified so the translated document does not reproduce an inflected ending as part of the registered spelling. Identity records and company extracts give reliable reference forms.

Latin spellings follow the record that the document must match, and place names need a settled form: Ukrainian official romanisation gives Kyiv, not Kiev. Where the source uses an older Russian-based spelling, the translator flags it instead of copying it forward.

Terms that mislead

Ukrainian час means time, while година is the hour; in Russian, час is the hour. Ukrainian актуальний means current or topical, which English readers may misread as actual. Technical prose has many international roots whose exact scope must come from the subject and the sentence.

Business translation keeps a company’s trading description apart from its legal identity. For technical translation, reference diagrams and approved product terminology separate a component from the action performed on it, and warnings require attention to negation. Neighbouring pages cover Russian translation separately.

Practical questions

Ukrainian translation
before commissioning

Can Russian text be used instead of Ukrainian?

No. Russian and Ukrainian are separate languages and should be commissioned separately. The intended reader, publication language and receiving organisation set the target. A Russian version can be useful reference material, but it does not replace a Ukrainian translation or settle Ukrainian spelling, terminology and forms of address.

Which letters are specific to Ukrainian?

Ukrainian uses ґ, є, і and ї, and an apostrophe inside certain words. Fonts, search functions and exported text must preserve the real characters; replacing them with similar-looking Latin or Russian letters creates text that looks right and fails in a database search or a name comparison.

How are Ukrainian names written in other languages?

Ukrainian names are handled with reference to the source spelling and the document’s purpose. Existing Latin or other-script spellings in relevant records, such as a passport, should accompany the request. The linguist also separates a case ending from the base form so the same person is identified consistently.

Who revises a Ukrainian translation?

A second qualified linguist revises it under the agency’s ISO 17100 process. Revision compares the target text with the source, including meaning, omissions and terminology. The translator’s subject expertise and the reviser’s independent comparison serve different purposes; a spellcheck alone cannot show that a text says the same thing.

What information is needed for a Ukrainian translation quote?

A quote needs the source files, the language direction, the intended use and the requested deadline. Mixed-language files should be identified, together with existing name spellings and approved terminology. The translation quote guide explains how document condition and reference material affect the assessment.
